The Rise of Asian Universities

In an article in the May/June issue of Foreign Affairs, Richard C. Levin, the president of Yale University, discusses the rise of Asias universities, arguing that Asia is now focused on building universities that can compete with the finest in the world.

Levin says that developing top universities is a tall order but that both China and India are making substantial investments into developing their institutions of higher learning.

“World-class universities achieve their status by assembling scholars who are global leaders in their fields. In the sciences, this requires first-class facilities, adequate funding and competitive salaries and benefits.”

China, he says, is making substantial investments on all three fronts.

“It takes more than research capacity alone for a nation to develop economically, however. It takes well-educated citizens of broad perspective and dynamic entrepreneurs capable of independent and original thinking. The leaders of China, in particular, have been very explicit in recognizing that two elements are missing from their universities: multi-disciplinary breadth and the cultivation of critical thinking.

“The traditional Asian approaches to curriculum and pedagogy may work well for training line engineers and mid-level government officials, but they are less suited to fostering leadership and innovation. Students who aspire to be leaders in business, medicine, law, government or academia need the discipline of mind the ability to adapt to constantly changing circumstances, confront new facts, and find creative ways to solve problems. Cultivating such habits requires students to be more than passive recipients of information; they must learn to think for themselves.”

India, he writes, established five Indian Institutes of Technology in the 1950s and 1960s, and 10 more in the past 20 years. These are “outstanding institutions for educating engineers,” Levin says, but not competitive globally in research. The “egalitarian politics” of India have made it difficult to develop world-class research universities.

Levin does think India has one powerful advantage of China though, and that is in the freedom of the faculty to pursue their intellectual interests and for both faculty and students to express and test “heretical and unconventional theories.”

“Asian countries,” Levin concludes, “have increasing access to the human, physical, and informational resources needed to create top universities. If they concentrate their growing resources on a handful of institutions, tap a worldwide pool of talent, and embrace freedom of expression and freedom of inquiry, they will succeed in building world-class universities.”

Start A New Career By Completing Correspondence Or Online Courses

Many people find themselves stuck in a dead end job and although they dream of having a terrific career, they cannot afford to stop working in order to go back to school and earn the diploma they need. Men and women who want to earn a diploma while holding down a full or part-time job should find out more about distance education. People can complete a high quality educational program by taking correspondence or online courses from home.

The Benefits of Distance Education

Distance education allows people to complete their lessons in their spare time. They can work on assignments before or after work and they do not have to worry about traveling to and from school. Those who choose online education complete their coursework on a computer. Online education is a great option for anyone who has a computer and high-speed Internet access. People who take online courses still receive their lessons and textbooks through the mail. Personal assistance is available to all students and students can email their teacher to ask any questions they have about their assignments. While some online educators require students to take a supervised examination at the end of their course, other educational institutes offer open-book exams that students can complete from their home computer.

Australia Colleges and Universities Depend on Tuition of Overseas Students

Economist Stephen King warned that universities and colleges might fall into deficit if Australia government intended to expand higher education on a large scale.

Professor King pointed that the plan of expanding the enrollment of domestic students meant that more overseas students should pay full tuition in order to support local students.

He said that -Where can we find so many overseas students to support local students? Taken the current funds into consideration, the plan of the federal government can only make all universities and colleges fall into deficit.-

Professor King’s comments are based on the reports of HES. One of the reports reveals that overseas students’ tuition support 1,200 yuan to every domestic university student on average. He said that the only unexpected thing was that the subsidy is too little.

He also quoted essays from HES and said that the government’s plan to make 40% young people have at least a bachelor degree and goals of universities and colleges are essentially unrealistic.

He said that -The industry and the federal government want to get more from higher education system. But both sides seem to be unwilling to cost money. And as a professor of pessimistic science, my duty is to tell government and industry that how much you pay then how much you’ll gain. If they want to create top-notch higher education system, they have to pay money by themselves instead of relying on overseas students to support local students.-

To make the comments more interesting, Professor King has just stepped down from College of Business and Economics of Monash University. There are many overseas students who pay full tuition in the college. They have become the critical capital resources of the Monash University.
