Common Homeschooling Issues And How To Address Them

There is no shortage of reasons why you may be considering homeschooling your child or children as opposed to enrolling them into a traditional school environment. In households where moving is a frequent occurrence, it can be easier to homeschool your child as opposed to constantly uprooting and resettling them into local schools. You may also have moral objections to the curriculum offered in public schools, and the alternative private institution is not financially feasible. Additionally, some parents of children with learning disabilities want to offer their child the close, one-on-one attention they need to thrive in a learning environment.

Of course, there’s a large gap between knowing that homeschooling is the right choice for your child, and being prepared to carry it out. Fortunately, there are countless resources available to you to help you along the way. The following tips are meant to address common concerns many have about the topic in a manner that is helpful and productive.

One of the most common worries of parents who homeschool is that their child won’t receive the same level of socialization they would in a traditional schooling environment. Fortunately, this is also one of the easiest problems to address. Enroll your child in extracurricular activities that stimulate their interests and give them the opportunity to interact with peers who share these interests. Activities can include anything from service organizations like 4-H and the Boy or Girl Scouts to organized sports and karate lessons. In this way, you can let your child form meaningful and lasting social bonds with other children based on a shared interest in an activity.

Another common worry is the construction of a curriculum. Even well educated parents may feel unqualified when it comes to finding teachable material that keeps their child’s interest, much less meets state standards. Here is where it is extremely helpful to reach out to other parents in your area, as well as for local homeschooling organizations for advice and other means of support. These organizations will be well educated on what is required of parents and may be able to make teaching supplies available to you.

Finally, an extremely common fear among parents is that the financial, personal, and time commitment required will be overwhelming. While the final determination as to whether homeschooling is right for your child lies solely on you, a little research and communication can help you make an informed decision on the matter. Speak openly and honestly with your partner about finances, and whether you will be able to meet expenses with a single income earner. Don’t neglect to talk about the additional emotional support you will need when things get stressful in your new classroom. Again, local homeschooling organizations can help you here as well. Most importantly, speak to your child, and make sure he or she understands that you are both embarking on a mutually beneficial education experience together.

Minn. Survey Shows Impact of Recession on Student Loan Debt

The Minnesota State University Student Association has released the results of a survey it issued in September 2010 to help assess the impact of student loan debt on its members. Because the surveys number of responses is small — just 46 responses to date — the results dont hold tremendous scientific value, but they do paint a picture of how the recession has affected college loan debt and default rates in the state.

According to the compiled results, the survey respondents — all of whom graduated from one of Minnesotas public four-year universities — currently carry an average of $32,456 in student loans. Thats 40 percent more student loan debt than the national average of $23,186.

The respondents reported an average monthly student loan payment of $297 with an average loan repayment plan of 15 years. Although federal education loans have a standard repayment horizon of 10 years, borrowers who hold more than $30,000 in federal college loan debt may request a debt-help repayment plan that extends their repayment term to up to 25 years.

These results are consistent with the findings of the U.S. Department of Education released last fall, which show that Minnesotans leave school with more federal college loans than the average student nationwide but tend to default less often than borrowers in other states.

According to the Department of Education, 55 percent of Minnesota college students take on federal school loans to help pay for college expenses, compared to 37 percent of undergraduates nationwide and 47 percent of undergraduates from Midwestern states.

While carrying higher student loan debt loads, however, Minnesota borrowers have a default rate on their federal college loans of just 3.7 percent, compared to the national default rate of 7 percent.

These default rates are measured from students whose federal school loans entered repayment in 2007-2008 and who defaulted before October 1, 2009.

The 2008 default rate in Minnesota of 3.7 percent marked a rise from 3.3 percent in 2007 and 2.9 percent in 2006. Despite this upward trend in student loan defaults, Minnesota ranks 51st in default rates out of the 54 states and territories assessed by the Department of Education.

Officials from the Minnesota Office of Higher Education attribute the lower default rates in their state to better employment prospects for graduates. They also point out that students who leave school without graduating or who work in low-wage jobs are most likely to default on their college loans. Students who earn occupational certificates instead of college degrees are also at a higher risk of defaulting.

Graduates of Minnesotas four-year private and public nonprofit universities were the least likely to default on their school loans. Just 1.4 percent of students from private universities and 1.9 percent of students from public universities who graduated with student loan debt defaulted in their first two years of repayment.

Using Homeschooling Software To Educate Children

Although many people have a different opinion about the subject, homeschooling software has become popular for many different reasons. Lots of situations call for different solutions, and it isn’t any different when it comes to homeschooling. For this reason, homeschooling software has come into the picture and is here to stay.

How is Homeschooling Software Used?

The software can be purchased and used at home as an educational tool, or it can be used by participating in an online homeschooling program. In either case, it’s important for parents to supervise the school time of children, but homeschooling software would take care of all the essentials in general education. Reading material, course studies, instructional video and homework along with testing is all part of homeschooling software.

What homeschooling software does not do but should be implemented by the parents themselves, is offer on hands learning in the way of field trips, experiments, playing music or doing art projects to name a few.

Using Homeschooling Software Via an Education Program Online

This option would require a tuition fee, and sometimes even an enrollment fee. However parents don’t have to invest in the homeschooling software used through the homeschooling program. Everything is taken care of, and progress reports as well as grades are documented and shared with parents.

Keep in mind that homeschooling over the Internet still requires parent involvement in order for it to be successful. There are sometimes tutoring programs in addition to the general education programs offered through homeschooling programs online, which helps to enhance the learning experience for kids, especially in grade school.

Purchasing Homeschooling Software for Use at Home

This option may be more expensive up front depending on the quality of the homeschooling software you choose to purchase, but it can be well worth it. Using homeschooling software at home is ideal for parents who plan to be home with their children and assist with homeschooling, but don’t have the expertise or experience they feel they should have to create a complete school program themselves.

Many times, this software helps to inspire parents and give them ideas to help broaden and enlighten their children’s learning experience, making the software that much more valuable.

Some parents choose to use homeschooling software for part of a school day, and then finish up the day on their own. This works well too, as the software can pick up the slack where a parent might not be as skilled in teaching. In the end, it’s thought that homeschooling software can benefit a child’s schooling at home no matter what the situation is.
